Development Milestones For Your Baby – One Key Aspect

Development Milestones For Your Baby - One Key Aspect

The development milestones of your baby are important. They not only give you an idea if your baby is on the right growth path but also help you in taking the necessary interventions to course correct any deviations. Technically you do not have to memorize them.

However, with continued observation, you will start to remember most of these. There is one key aspect to your baby’s cognitive development though. You must ensure your baby gets the right amount of sleep for his/her development. Here are a few reasons why sleep is a major factor that influences the development milestones of your baby.

Most newborns wake up often for feedings. As the mother of a newborn, it will be very difficult. You cannot sleep because your baby does not have those long hours of sleep. Most babies do not get into the routine of sleeping without waking through the night until 3 months of age or until they weigh 12 to 13 pounds.

Sleep impacts all aspects of development. Getting the baby to have a sound sleep is therefore important and critical for the overall growth and cognitive development of the baby.

Learning – First Of The Development Milestones

Infants who are sleeping well have difficulties learning things around them. It impacts their ability to recognize, sounds, things, and people. Challenges like the ability to process information and remember it crop up. So it is important for infants to get enough sleep to learn about their new surroundings.

Impacts Mood

If infants are not sleeping enough, it will impact their mood and emotional state of mind even at that age. This will make it difficult for them to interact with the family, like parents, grandparents, and others visiting. This will, in turn, create a ripple effect in their social abilities. Getting good sleep either in short intervals or through the night as the baby grows up is, therefore, a very essential element.

Low Growth Hormones – Critical Component For Development Milestones

When a baby is suffering from insufficient sleep the body does not release enough growth hormones and this directly impacts the ability of the child to build other skills. This will impact growth and development at both physical and psychological levels.

Builds Immunity

You should also know that sleep is a very important aspect of building the immune system of the body. Improper or inadequate sleep restricts the body to develop immunity and hence exposes the baby to various infections and illnesses.

It is therefore critical to ensure that your baby sleeps well and sufficiently rested. Your baby may be delayed in rolling over, learning to sit, or stand and crawl if he/she is suffering from inadequate sleep. You should get your baby into a routine to get to sleep. Time, surroundings, related music, touch, and many other factors can help the baby’s mind recognize sleep time and learn to go to sleep. Most important of all this is the place that the baby is used to sleeping.

The familiarity with the crib, sheets, and other items help the baby to realize the routine and get into the mode of closing for the day. Invest in a good crib that you can move around even if you have traveled to ensure the routine is not disturbed too much.
