Initial Feeding Facts

The initial feed should be about 8-12 times in a 24 hour period. You will find it helpful if you keep track of how often your baby is feeding with a feeding block. You now have apps that help you do this or you can simply track on a paper. Babies need no other food than breast milk for the first six months. This includes water or juice.

Signs Of Illness To Look Out For While Raising A Baby

There are a number of signs to look out for in the newborn that could indicate an underlying infection or illness. If you notice cough, inconsolable crying, breathing difficulties, decreased responsiveness, or significant change in feeding pattern, get in touch with the doctor immediately. Remember the baby’s appetite should be steady or increase over a period of time. In newborn babies, a high or low temperature can mean infections. While you do not have to check it every single day, it is a good idea to do so in regular periods.

Skin Care To Remember While Raising A Baby

Make sure you give your baby a bath every couple of days with warm water and a washcloth. Do not submerge the baby underwater until the umbilical cord has fallen off. Use a sponge bath till then to keep the baby clean. Trim the finger and toenails with a file or an infant nail clipper. Dry skin is common in newborns, as it may shed and new skin will grow in a few days. Avoid moisturizers or lotions that contain perfume.

Safety First

It is against the law to transport a baby without a car seat. For the first two years of the baby, all car seats should be rear-facing in the back seat and in the middle of the car. Local agencies can check your car seats for proper installation and fit the one that is appropriate for you. While your baby is awake it is ok to place on the tummy for a few minutes. This will increase strength. However, do this while on your watch. Do not leave the baby alone while at this.

If you plan to introduce a bottle of express milk at the age of one month, it is important that you never prop the bottle on a pillow or blanket. This can cause ear infections and lead to your baby choking. As another family member for assistance or hold off on feeding for a few minutes until you can attend to your baby.

When using a bottle to feed your baby make sure that the bottle is warm and clean. Cold temperatures are not suitable for babies. Make sure you warm the bottle using a bottle warmer and protect it from outside bacteria and potential infections.
